The company
Home of the original sandbar trip
Fun in the Sun has run sandbar trips out of Stock Island for more than fifteen years and calls itself the home of the original one. It is a charter and rental shop rolled together: captained trips for up to six leave from Stock Island Yacht Club, rental boats from Oceans Edge next door, and there are golf carts and vacation rentals under the same name. A sister operation runs in Fort Lauderdale.
Owner Shon Williams and manager Aaron both grew up in Key West and on the water, and run the boats and golf carts day to day; Shon has 25 years in the industry. The captains are freelance locals they pick themselves. Booking is by text and phone and reviews single that out: fast answers, a captain who reads the wind and picks the sandbar accordingly, and boats that are kept up.

The captained sandbar trip
Two and a half, four or six hours at a sandbar with a captain, on a 26-foot Century deck boat or the 23-foot tritoon. Bottled water and ice aboard, snorkel gear, rods and lobster gear in season, licenses and bait, and beach games. Bring your own food and drinks; catering can be arranged.
Six passengers maximum on the captained boats, 325 pounds per person. Departures at 9, 2 and 4.

Rentals without a captain: the 23-foot tritoon from $495 for a half day and the 30-foot double-decker from $550, plus smaller boats on their site. Renters must be 25.

Where to board
Captained charters: Stock Island Yacht Club, 6000 Peninsular Avenue; the gate code comes with your confirmation. Past the gate, turn right by the ship store, follow the road past the forklifts and along the water to the dock; Shon's map marks the spot. Rentals: Oceans Edge, 5950 Peninsular Avenue, next door.

On every captained trip: snorkel gear, bottled water and coolers with ice; lily pads on request. Rods, lobster gear and licenses in season, bait and beach games per the trip.
