The 2026 Conch Shell Awards
Every year we look at the Key West operators listed on this site and recognise the ones putting the most on the water. These are the 33 nominees for 2026.
How nominees were chosen
Nominations are drawn from our own catalogue, not from a public vote or a paid entry. We list 1,624 bookable tours from local operators across the Florida Keys, 872 of them in Key West itself. Nominees are the operators with the deepest catalogue in each category, re-measured on 3 October 2026.
Nominees and winners are chosen on different bases, and we would rather say so than blur them. The nominee list above is drawn from catalogue depth. Winners are scored on the published rubric below. Both are editorial decisions made by this site; neither is a panel, a public vote or an industry body.
- No operator paid to be nominated, and none can.
- Nomination does not affect where an operator appears in our search results.
- Tour counts are what we actually list and can currently be booked — retired and sold-out listings are not counted. They move as operators add and drop trips, so these figures are re-measured rather than fixed.
- Nominations stay open as the catalogue grows. Sixteen operators were added on 8 September 2026, taking the list from 14 to 34; anyone added later joins the same year’s list. One operator has since been removed, because none of its tours could be booked on any date we checked; that leaves 33.
- Several nominees sail from Marathon, Islamorada or Key Largo rather than Key West. We list them, so they are eligible.
How winners are scored
Every operator we list runs on FareHarbor, which means we can check something most review sites cannot: whether a tour is actually bookable right now, at the price shown. That check is the backbone of this rubric. Scores were last computed on 3 October 2026 across 107 operators and are re-measured, not fixed.
What has to be true before an operator is scored at all
- A published rating of 4.3 or better, where the operator publishes one.
- At least one of the tours we feature is bookable.
- Availability on at least half the dates we check.
- A standing signal we can actually read — a category rank in a field of 20 or more, or a review count. An operator we cannot measure is reported as unscored rather than given a low score.
The score
70% standing, 30% booking integrity.
- Standing is the operator's Tripadvisor category rank expressed as a percentile, where the category holds at least 20 listings. Below that we use review volume on a log scale, floored at 50 reviews and capped at 5,000 — 20,000 reviews is not twenty times better than 1,000.
- Booking integrity is half how many of the tours we feature are bookable, and half how consistently they are available across four dates in the following eleven weeks.
Why star ratings are not part of the ranking
Across the 99 operators in our catalogue that publish a rating, the ratings run from 4.3 to 5.0, with a median of 4.9. There is no real spread to rank on, and the underlying numbers move: two readings of the same Tripadvisor listing on the same day returned 4.4 and 4.6. Ranking operators on a tenth of a star would be inventing precision that is not there. A rating has to clear our floor, and after that it does not move anyone up or down.
Why we check a near window, not a far one
We check availability over the next eleven weeks rather than the next year. An earlier version of this rubric looked six months out and mistook unopened calendars for cancelled tours — many Key West operators simply do not open bookings that far ahead. Penalising an operator for a calendar setting would be measuring us, not them.
What we do not score
Catalogue size does not earn points. A single-boat charter running one trip well is not worse than an operator listing eighty products, and scoring breadth would just reward size. We report how many tours an operator lists; we do not rank on it.
Any operator we list can ask for their own score and the figures behind it, and we will send both.
