The company

The in-between of snorkeling and scuba

SNUBA was invented in Hawaii: a scuba regulator on a hose that runs up to an air tank floating on a raft, so a first-timer can go to twenty feet after a short briefing, no certification, no heavy gear. SNUBA of Key West has been a licensed SNUBA center since 1999 and is the go-to for cruise-ship days and families with kids who are too young for a scuba course.

The boat is Good Times, a 47-foot catamaran deck boat built in 2012 and certified for 49, with a head, a shower and a wet bar; the same boat runs the Key West Cocktail Cruise at sunset. A 32-foot Century center console, Lori C, does the Looe Key private charters out of Big Pine Key. Guides are PADI, NAUI or SSI certified, and the company also runs full PADI courses.

“Go beyond snorkeling.”

Captains and guides are named by guests in reviews (CJ, Josh, Dustin, Charles, Greg, Dan, Madison, Nicole and others); the roster is SNUBA's to confirm. Company page: snubakeywest.com.

The one to book

SNUBA: Go Beyond Snorkeling

Three to four hours: the ride out on Good Times, a fifteen-to-twenty-minute orientation, then a guided dive on the reef breathing from the surface line, with a snorkel session on the same site. All gear and instruction included, reverse-osmosis fresh water aboard to rinse.

Adults $120, kids 8 to 12 $100. Certified divers can bring their own tanks for $105, and snorkelers or riders come along for $65. The honest caveat from reviews: the SNUBA portion itself is about half an hour in the water.

What guests say

Reviewers write about guides who are patient with nervous first-timers and safety-first in the water, and about how much life there is on the reef at twenty feet. The recurring complaint is that the SNUBA portion is short, around thirty minutes.
