The company

A footwear executive, a dog named Camillo, and a shack on the channel

Sue Cooper left a marketing job at a Connecticut shoe company, moved to Key West in 1997, worked a season for a kayak outfit and started Lazy Dog in 1998 as a kayak-and-T-shirt company. The logo is Camillo, the original lazy dog. She added paddleboards in 2007 and by 2009 had the biggest board fleet on the island; she also founded the Key West Paddle Classic and wrote a paddleboard program for Special Olympics.

The base is a ten-by-ten shack and a floating dock at Hurricane Hole on Cow Key Channel, which is the point: the mangroves start at the dock, so the two hours are all paddling, not transit. About 67 kayak seats, 40 boards and one pontoon boat.

The one to book

The two-hour kayak eco tour

A guided paddle through the mangrove tunnels and flats of Cow Key Channel. Lesson at the dock, then two hours on protected water where the wildlife is close: rays, starfish, juvenile sharks, sometimes a manatee. All levels; the water is calm and shallow.

The paddleboard version is the same route standing up, lesson included. Both are $70 per adult, $50 to $55 for kids under 12, with military and first-responder rates.
